YOG Education

Olympic Education

As Singapore is hosting the Asian Youth Games in 2009 and the Youth Olympic Games in 2010, the Olympic Education is introduced in PRCS at the beginning of year 2009. The Olympic Education comprises of worksheets, quizzes and video clips shown to the students. These materials are based on the Olympic Education Programme (OEP) developed by MOE and supported by the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee. Students from all levels are taught the Olympic spirit & values as well as the history and progression of the Olympic Games over the years. The PE teachers in PRCS also conducted Olympic-related games like track and field events during PE lessons. Documentary video clips on the Olympic Games are shown to students to make the lesson more interesting and enjoyable.

Olympic Themed ISH Logo

The Indoor Sports Hall (ISH) would served as an avenue for students to participate more actively in sports. Be it rain or shine, it is an additional space for the students to partake in more physical activities. Its beautifully designed hall consists of 4 badminton courts and 1 volleyball court at the 3 rd floor with 1 netball court on the 2 nd floor.

This logo for the ISH has been thought of using the Olympic theme of “Citius, Altius, Fortius” – Swifter, Higher, Stronger. The 5 colours represent the different races, language and backgrounds of all our students. The rings gets bigger signifying that no matter what size they are when they begin, they will grow bigger, signifying stronger, and eventually emerge as stars, as shown at the top right hand corner of the logo.

The multicolour logo also serves to indicate the variety of the sports events that are to be held in the school, especially in our new ISH.

Indoor Sports Hall (ISH) Wall Mural

The Indoor Sports Hall (ISH) in PRCS was officially opened by our DPM Mr. Teo Chee Hean on 3 rd July 2009 and coincided with our 10 th Anniversary Celebration. The murals on the wall were painted with the Olympic Motto (Citius, Altius, Fortius) in mind. They are displayed on the side walls as well as along the stairs leading up to the second level. Names of cities where the Olympic Games were once held are also displayed on the walls as part of the Olympic Education.

Visit to the “Youth-Olympic-Spirit 2” Exhibition at Temasek Polytechnic

An exhibition titled “Youth-Olympic-Spirit 2” was held at Design Space, level 2, Temasek Design School at Temasek Polytechnic from 17 th to 20 th February 2009 . Pasir Ris Crest Secondary School had sent about 30 students to view the exhibits created by design students in TP. These works include modified sports outfits for athletes, Olympic torch design, paintings, sports symbols and medal designs etc. There was also a tour round the Design School prior to viewing the exhibition. The touring of the entire place and explanation of the exhibits was undertaken by the Design students themselves. Our PRCS students have gained invaluable knowledge about the Asian Youth Games (AYG) through the exhibition as well as knowing more about the Design School in Temasek Polytechnic through this event.

Sports Leaders Award ( SLA )

The Sports Leader Award (SLA) is a leadership development programme to encourage students to develop the interest and skills to serve the school community in a variety of areas in sports. Through this programme, students will be given the opportunity to develop qualities of leadership and responsibility and to demonstrate organisational ability and decision-making skills by leading other pupils in sports and recreational activities. This programme is targeted at Secondary two and three students. The programme will be monitored and conducted with the help of a teacher mentor. The role of the mentor is to provide opportunities for interested pupils to carry out assigned projects in sports and recreation and to monitor their performance in planning and implementation. They are also required to assist conducting the training.

In Term 2, each of our five Sports CCA teachers-in-charge nominated one Secondary Two student from their CCA for the SLA (namely Yeo Yilei, Shermaine Sim, Muhd Huzaifah, Glen Tan and Tan Guo Fong). In order to receive this award, these five students have to attend the SLA workshop (three hours) organized by the CCAB and Singapore Schools Sports Council and to complete and help out in various school sports events, under the supervision of PE teacher, Mrs Fan-Ho Chin Ching. Some of these sports events include Principal Challenge 2009 and Swimming Carnival 2009.
